Giving back with grace

In Malaysia’s ever-shifting landscape of commerce and competition, few stories resonate as deeply as those rooted in compassion. CapitaLand, a name familiar to many, recently reminded the nation that behind logos and towers stands a beating heart. At the 2025 Sustainability & CSR Malaysia Awards, CapitaLand was awarded Company of the Year (Shopping Mall Category) and Long-Standing Excellence for its #GivingBersama 4.0 initiative — a programme that does more than distribute aid; it fosters dignity, choice, and community.

Between late October and December 2024, CapitaLand Hope Foundation (CHF), the group’s philanthropic arm, mobilized more than 180 employees who collectively logged over 1,400 volunteer hours. Their effort reached more than 2,600 beneficiaries — including 800 underserved children from 21 orphanages and more than 600 low-income families. What made the initiative stand out was its bazaar-style distribution, where recipients were empowered to choose items that best met their needs. “We believe building resilient communities goes beyond financial contributions,” said Selina Ng, Managing Director, Retail, CapitaLand Investment (Malaysia).

In another corner of Malaysia, ISP Group of Companies was recognised for its Nourish with Hope — ISP Cares! initiative. What began as an emergency aid programme during the pandemic evolved into a sustainable, long-term social effort. Over RM216,000 worth of food, school essentials, and daily necessities have been distributed to more than 120 families in Sekinchan, Selangor. CEO Eric Ng explained the company’s broader vision: “Our work doesn’t stop at building infrastructure. We believe in building opportunities, resilience, and dignity for the communities we serve.”

Both CapitaLand and ISP embody the new face of CSR in Malaysia — one grounded in empathy, sustainability, and consistent action. Their work transcends traditional philanthropy by embedding social and environmental values into daily operations. From green features in worker accommodations to empowering local families through choice and inclusion, these initiatives prove that CSR can be both compassionate and strategic.

As Malaysia continues its journey toward a more equitable future, companies like these are setting new standards of corporate citizenship. Their message is simple yet profound: when businesses give with grace, they build not just profit, but purpose.
